Weekly training

1 week back and it is good to see most of the familiar faces back in action! Meanwhile in the background the club committee have been busy getting the current season events up and running so expect this report to be a little bit long while we give the lowdown on some of what the club is offering over the coming season….so sit down with a cuppa and have a read!!!!!!

Junior club – Bikepark

The first Junior club session took place on Saturday and the destination was the Bikepark in Ballingarry. A group of over 30 junior and not so junior members arrived to take the slopes on by storm in what was a great afternoon on the mountain bikes and everyone made it out in one piece! Well done all!

Nenagh CBS 5K/10K

The annual CBS run took place in rather damp conditions on Sunday morning and a number of our senior and junior members attended this local event so well done to all!

North Tipp sprint 2017

The first National series race of the year is again our own North Tipp Sprint and takes place on Saturday April 15th. We are due to go live with registration on Monday 23rd January at 9am and this usually sells out pretty quick.

As ever we actively encourage members to take part in this event but ask that if you plan on entering that you can get someone to help marshal the event in your place, and if you have taken part in the race over the last number of years to perhaps marshal this year and give members who do not get an opportunity to potentially take part!

The success of this event in the past has come from the help the club receives from club members in organising and running the event and so this year we again hope for the same level of support!

North Tipp Sprint 2017

“Try a tri” 2017

The annual Lions club “try a tri” date has been set for Saturday June 10th at 10am and over the coming months we will keep you updated on this and any preparatory sessions the club are running. Again, if you know of anyone who is looking for a new challenge in 2017 then why not invite them to any of the club sessions and target this event in early Summer!!!

As part of the pre-launch for this event there will be a promotion taking place on Tuesday 24th January at 5pm in association with Asics and A Sportman’s Dream and we will give you more details on this during the week!

Yearly Calendar

The committee have had sleepless night and many a running battle but all to the end of preparing the season calendar for 2017. This year we have put together a senior and junior calendar for events and hope that we can get as many members attending these as possible.

So we would ask that before you sign-up for any triathlons for the coming season that you look at the calendar and try to pick events the club are focusing on. Triathlon is in essence an individual sport but wherever possible we are trying to bring in a group ethos and social element, but need members to buy into this, and we hope that we can get good member groups at the calendar events.

To kick us off this year, first up is our initial Club training weekend and is due to take place Sat 25th – Sun 26th February. We have a couple of plans in motion for this and will let you know in a future report so stay tuned!!!!!!


Junior / Novice sessions

Junior / novice turbo training continues this Tuesday at 6pm in Nenagh GAA Complex. Novice running takes place on Thursday at 6.30pm in Nenagh College.

The next Junior weekend session planned is back in Nenagh CBS on Saturday January 28th at 12.30pm.

We have been asked to let you know about a number of events that are coming up so have outlined these briefly below:

Nutrition seminars

My name is Paul Ogle. I’m with the Waterford triathlon club. I am doing some work with Bryan McCrystal and he is launching a nutrition based seminar based on triathlon and Ironman and the tips and pitfalls to watch out for in the lead up to races. He is supported by a top nutritionist Barry Murray who will be detailing the types of foods and supplements that should be included for athletes to maximise their investment into the sport.  The seminars will be starting on March 4th and depending on uptake, we intend on running four throughout the country, but the initial one will be in Dublin, with places restricted to about sixty people.  I was wondering if I could ask you to put a link onto your club website and facebook page to the event and see if your members would have any interest. Triathlon Ireland / Swim Ireland Membership

As this stage in the year annual membership to Triathlon Ireland is due and there are a number of membership types. Remember that Triathlon Ireland is required so that you are insured for training purposes over the course of the year so it is important that you check the website and join TI at some level so that you are covered.

This year TI has introduced a combined racing membership with Swim Ireland. The combined cost is €75 and allows members to race in both TI events and Swim Ireland events.

With the formation of Nenagh masters we would hope that swimmers attending these events will take out the combined licence and attend some of the swimming galas over the course of the season.

Weekly training


We covered the swimming sessions the club offers in detail last week but just there have been a few issues raised regarding cost. Again, as a club we are doing everything we can to keep club costs to a minimum….if we owned our own pool then maybe we could offer a further reduction but without this there is going to be some cost involved! But again we will say that in comparison to almost all other triathlon or swimming clubs we are far cheaper and give numerous options so you can choose what suits.

Again in summary,

  • Tuesday 6.30am: Lane Swimming (no coach cost)
  • Wednesday 9pm: Coached Session (€7)
  • Thursday 6.30am: Lane Swimming (no coach cost)
  • Friday 6.30am: Coached Session (€7)


The morning sessions are cost neutral and only require leisure centre admission, so if you avail of a leisure centre pass this will further reduce cost.

The Wednesday evening and Friday morning sessions can be paid in advance (which costs less than the price of a regular swim!!) or for a small bit extra on a pay-as-you-go basis, but is not covered by a membership pass so means you do need to pay the full €7 each time at reception and you need to sign-in as the club have to hire a lane for these sessions. 


Swimming sessions: 2 morning sessions this week.  Tuesday morning is a short sprint set while Thursday is a long distance swim set.

Shorter versions for the novice lane will be supplied on the morning and will cover 1-1.5k.
