The latest round of the Nenagh Summer League took place in glorious sunshine this evening. We welcomed back a number of rás riders to the race, although the 3 Nenagh CC rás riders were only brave enough to marshal! Simon Ryan and Paul Kennedy were looking to get back into the swing of things with plenty of the race season still to go.
There were just over 30 on the start line so we reduced it to 3 groups on the road with the handicaps at 0, 6 and 9 minutes. These weren’t very big handicaps so it was no surprise when the large scratch bunch caught the middle group before the half way mark. The scratch group were working well and they soon caught the first group.
From the flyover onwards cyclists started getting dropped. One by one the elastic snapped. There was still a sizeable bunch at the front but it was starting to string out. On the climb at the Yellowbridge, Matty and Con Kennedy broke from the bunch. They were soon joined by the rás lads. At the top of the hill Dan Hogan and two others got across to form a very strong front bunch that would not get caught.
The rest of the field were scattered all over the place but as they neared Birdhill small chase groups were forming. Those groups didn’t have the fire power to get across to the break.
On the final ramp, 3 riders forged ahead while the others died a death. Fighting it out for the win were Paul Kennedy, Ronan Costelloe and Simon Ryan. Paul Kennedy took the win by half a wheel from Ronan in a new record time for the short climb. Simon was next over the line followed by Con Kennedy. First woman home was Cliodhna McGrath and first junior was Daniel Yon Hin.
Thanks to everyone for supporting the race. Thanks also to our marshals this evening.
See ye all again next week.
