Nenagh Summer League: Race 16

We are coming close to the end of the summer series. This race is the 2nd last race and it turned out to be a very close fought affair. Over 30 cyclists turned up, which meant we had 3 groups on the road with handicaps of 9 min and 4 mins. Once again the weather was kind to us; over the last 16 weeks of this series I can’t remember one bad day. Having said that, I have no doubt jinxed our last race of the season next Thursday!

The scratch group was 90% Nenagh CC today so they would have to battle amongst themselves for the win. Team tactics wouldn’t count for much. The pace out the road was fast and the 4 minute time gap to the middle bunch was eaten up well before the roundabout. The pace didn’t let up after the groups merged. Everyone was doing their turn at the front and shortly after the roundabout the first group was caught. The racing could now begin.

First to try their luck in a break was Derek Bowen. He was soon joined by Kieran Jackson and Shane Scully and they started to open a gap on the bunch. As the break tackled the incline at the Yellowbridge they were joined by Darren Dunne and Eoin O’Donoghue. This group of 5 worked well together but there were plenty of strong riders in the bunch behind so the gap never got too big.

Next to make the jump up into the break were Mikey Browne and Kenneth Kennedy. They helped inject some added pace to the bunch but on the downhill before Birdhill Gary Scully, Keith Butler, Brian O’Neill and Cathal Oakes also closed the gap so there were plenty of cyclists still in contention for the win.

Approaching Birdhill, everyone was looking to save their legs for the final climb. Shane Scully, Kieran Jackson and Mike Browne worked the last few km into Birdhill and onto the ramp. Shane decided to set a good pace from the very bottom and lined it out. As he passed under the second flyover there was just one left on his wheel and that was Darren Dunne. The finish was another 400m away (around the corner) and this proved to far for Shane, with Darren coming around him before the finish line to take the win.

Thanks to our marshals: Bertie Sherlock, Sinead Kennedy, Lady Aoife, Majella & Roisin Moyles.
