The Nenagh 4 Mile Road Race took place last weekend in glorious sunshine. There were a record number of race entrants with 99 people signing up for the challenge. The race attracted a strong field with everyone looking to share in the €1000 of cash prizes that was on offer.
There was a strong Nenagh contingent at the race with Brian Murray, Nicolai Morosov, Gary and Shane Scully, Mark Gleeson and top junior Darren Dunne all taking part. In the women’s event Nenagh had some strong contenders in Alvy Carragher, Cliodhna McGrath and Sinnead Oakes
The race was won by Pat Byrne from Tinryland AC in a new record time of 20:15 for the 4 mile route. Pat surged into the lead early on and held that lead till the end. Nenagh’s Brian Murray was the next man to finish in a time of 20:46. The final podium place in the men’s race went to Dwayne Farrell who was also representing Tinryland AC.
In the women’s race, Angela McCann was back to defend her title from last year. She needed to put in a record breaking time of 23:38 to stay clear of Templemore’s Margaret Danagher in 2nd place. 3rd place went to Alvy Carragher from Nenagh who put in a fine performance, crossing the finish line in a time of 24:50.
Prizes were given out in many categories on the day. In the Vets race the winners were Tommy Payne and Mary Carty. In the Male Junior race Nenagh’s Darren Dunne raced away from his competitors to win in a new Junior record of 22:46. The winners of the O/45 category were Nenagh’s Mark Gleeson and Marie Moynan. The winner of the male O/50 category was David Toohey. The winners of the O/55 category were Ned O’Brien and Carmel MacDomhnaill. The winner of the male O/60 category was Eddie Cahalan.
It is great to once again have a road race in Nenagh and hopefully more Nenagh people will take up the challenge next year. The club would like to congratulate everyone that took part. We would also like to thank all our marshalls for helping out on the day. Lastly, we would like to thank Nenagh Eire Og for the use of their facilities.
