The senior cycling team were out in force on Saturday and continued on the excellent form shown in Tralee and Loughrea last week. A team of 8 made their way to Summerhill in Co. Meath looking for more points. Once again they represented the back and white jerseys of Nenagh CC very well. First off was the A1/A2 race where Gary and Simon took to the start line. A safe bunch finish was the best we could do in this race. Things got better in the A3 race where Bob Murray and Darren Dunne took to the start line. This was Darren’s first taste of competitive cycling and he did well finishing in the bunch. At the age of 16, it won’t be long before Darren is winning these races. That feat was almost accomplished by Bob Murray who was beaten into 2nd place in a bunch sprint finish. It’s another podium finish for the club so we are all delighted with that.
We had a strong line up for what was a short A4 race. Kevin Sherlock fresh from his podium finish last week lined up beside Hugh Flannery (who was making a welcome return to racing!), Keith Butler, and Eoin Woolley who was making his first appearance of the season. As per usual the A4 race ended in a bunch sprint finish. Our lads were well positioned for the fast run-in to the line and it was Eoin Woolley who crossed the line first for the club in 2nd place overall. This is a great performance by Eoin and hopefully it is a sign of bigger things to come for him this season. Not far behind in 4th place was Kevin Sherlock – normally 4th place would secure points for the finisher but due to the short distance course only the top 3 look like scoring – this means Kevin misses out on his promotion to A3 for another week at least. Hugh Flannery managed to hold on for 6th place after leading Eoin Woolley out perfectly in the final stretch. Again, if this was a regular distance race we would be seeing Hugh promoted, but like Kevin he will have to stay in A4 for another week or two.
Hopefully Sticky Bottle might soon get the name of our team right. They have had 4 goes at it now!
