Congratulations to everyone that took part in the Lough Derg Sprint this year. Once again the weather was kind to us and we were treated to a great race. It was great to see everyone coping so well with the technical bike course. At least the lake was nice and calm for the swim; although the final leg sapping run course left everyone tired out at the end.
In the men’s race, we had 3 competitors well out in front at the finish line. Out of the swim, it was Stephan Teeling Lynch that had a slight lead on David Richardson. One of the pre-race favourites, Killian Heery, was 2.5 minutes down at this stage so had a lot of catching up to do. Coming into the final transition, it was Stephan still out ahead with a 30 second lead moving onto the hilly run route. David was 2nd and Killian had moved into 3rd after recording the fastest bike split of the day. David moved into the overall lead by the turn around point on the run but Killian was closing the gap fast. In the end, David had enough left in the tank to take the victory, 26 seconds ahead of Killian, with Stephan 20 seconds further back in 3rd.
In the women’s race, we had another close battle between the top 3 ladies. Joanne Flanagan had a great swim and that placed her well out in front on the bike. A super fast bike split from Kim Doyle saw her move through the field and close the gap on Joanne. Also cycling well was Denise Compton and it was these 3 ladies that came into transition ahead of the rest. Joanne led early in the run but was soon overtaken by a fast moving Kim Doyle. Kim then pushed on ahead and won by 1 minute from Joanne in 2nd and Denise, who was 8 seconds further behind in 3rd.
In the junior boy’s race, Eoghan Beary cycled and ran very well to finish first ahead of Tiernan Burke. Eoghan finished in 4th in the overall standings.
In the junior girl’s race, Natasha Carrick put in a good swim and run to take the win from Róisín Dunne in 2nd. Natasha finished 8th overall in the women’s race.
In the over 40 category our winners were Dave Beary and Denise Compton.
The relay event was won by Swim Ireland NZ
The Nenagh Triathlon Club had 15 club members taking part in the event. Derek Bowen, Derek Gilmartin and Brian McLoughlin were the top 3 men overall. Carmel Finn was our sole female representative and for a lady that couldn’t swim very well at the start of the year she can be well happy with how well she went and how far she has come in just a few months. Also taking part from the club were Stephen Greene, Edward O’Meara, Ramon Rodriquez, Barry Creamer, David Sheahan, Colm Glynn, Tom Gallahue, Anthony Sherlock, John Ryan, and Greg Starr.
