Numbers were down a little for the latest race in our junior summer league. With the Junior Cert on and lots gone on holidays I suppose we will just have to forgive ye!! There were still 10 entrants in the race with 6 in the 28km race and 4 in the 16km race. Everyone was looking to improve on their PB from the last race. With the sunny weather and low winds is certainly was possible.
28km race: there were two groups with 3 in each. James, Tom (making a welcome return after injury) and Christian (making his club debut) went first and had a two minute head start. Chasing them were Aaron, Jack and Conor. After a quarter of the race the gap hadn’t really come down much as the front group were pushing along nicely. However, as they closed in on the half way mark the lack of training and racing miles in Tom and Christian’s legs began to tell. Before they were caught, James Maloney broke from the group and put in a strong solo effort. A puncture ended Aaron’s race near the half way mark. That left Jack and Conor working together to reel in James. It took quite a while for them to catch him, but when they did James was unable to hold on and in the end had to settle for 3rd place. In the sprint for first Jack Boland won out with Conor coming in 2nd.
The times by Jack and Conor were very fast; almost beating the course record of Dillon Neary 55:20. James also put in a new PB for the distance.
- Jack Boland: 57:23 (flat time – 55:23)
- Conor Hough: 57:26 (flat time – 55:26)
- James Maloney: 57:58 (flat time – 57:58)
- Christian: 1:00:02 (shorter distance)
- Tom O’Meara: 1:02:40 (shorter distance)
- Aaron Duggan: DNF (puncture)
10km race: Liam, Calvin, Michael and Ahmed took part in this race. They were let off together and rolled over al the way to the turn around point. It was each man for themselves from this point on. It was Calvin that broke first and put in a gap before being joined by Michael not far from the finish. The two lads crossed the finish line together for joint 1st, with Liam in 3rd and Ahmed in 4th.
The times set by the boys in this one were way faster than the previous time they raced. They were obviously pushing it very hard. Each of the 4 lads set a new PB for the course. Great stuff!
1. Calvin O’Brien: 38:01 / Michael Reddan: 38:01
3. Liam Heffernan: 39:26
4. Ahmed Taha: 42:15
