Dillon Neary wins in style ….
Two groups of four set off for the Birdhill and back route. The front group consisted of Calvin O’Brien, Christopher O’Meara, Connor Adams, and Liam Heffernan, accompanied by their ever reliable coach, Anita. The lads had to hold onto an 11 minute lead if they were to win the race. They rolled over steadily, each taking turns at the front and still had a healthy lead at the half way mark.
The scratch group consisted of Dillon Neary, Sean O’Neill, Conor Hough and Conor Brennan. They settled into the race with big efforts each at the front which ate into the 11 minute gap to the front group. It was Dillon who made the first move with a brave solo breakaway. He jumped away with a big attack on the down hill into birdhill. The three lads behind him had to work hard to maintain the gap down to a manageable size. Dillon opened the gap to 60 seconds. Sensing the danger Conor Hough jumped away from his group. A superhuman effort saw him bring Dillon back to within 15 seconds. Dillon, however, dug deep and put the foot on the gas again.
The front group were still to be caught however. They were still in the lead entering into the last mile. Their group was a threesome now with Liam Heffernan racing over the shorter race course today, being tired from previous days activity. Liam still powered over the shorter course and looked very comfortable finishing, getting stronger each week, well done Liam. Catching the front group with a mile to go, Dillon had no mercy on his young team mates and just rode straight through the group, Conor Hough hot on his heels. Dillon held Conor at bay to the line to take first place. Once again the course record went with a blistering 53:19 being recorded. Great race Dillon, imagine how fast you would be with a bit of training! Conor came in second in a fantastic time of 53:40, also under the old course record showing Conors talent on the bike. Previous race winners Conor Brennan and Sean O’Neill came in two minutes back, a defeat to wet their appetites for revenge no doubt!!
Calvin and Christopher battled each other in a sprint to the line finishing in a dead heat, closely followed by Connor Adams. Well done lads. All setting personal bests of 1hr 5 mins. Next stop is a youth race in Athenry on Sunday……be afraid….. be very afraid….. only joking… it’s a flat course this time or so I’m told!! Best of luck, safe racing and do Nenagh CC proud!!!
