Lake Cycle: Half past seven of a Saturday morning seems fierce early to start off on a 70 mile cycle, especially when its grey and belting down with rain. Maybe this is the main reason we train and cycle together. Nothing like a bit of peer pressure and chat to motivate fuzzy heads and lazy limbs!
About 14 of us headed off from the pool and met with sunny spells, but also some very heavy showers. With the breaks between the rain, no one got too cold as long as we kept moving. On the road out of Portumna one of the gang came down, but thankfully with no serious damage done to man or machine. The hardy bucks from the “Visit Nenagh” team overtook the group just before Mountshannon where we all stopped for some well deserved drinks & food. There were no scones in sight, but there were whole packets of biscuits being scoffed by the speedy guys (this is obviously a fringe benefit of being able to do an average speed of 24mph!).
From Mountshannon to Killaloe the wind was very strong and Charlie and Harry put in a lot of work for the gang up at the front. A few were lost just before Killaloe, but only because they had left a car outside the town overnight, to shorten the cycle! The hill up to Portroe seemed manageable, with people finding their own pace for this section and then a good fast finish into Nenagh. Total distance 112km, average speed 28kph, cycling time just over four hours. Despite the rain a very enjoyable spin, even though at times it felt more like swimming than cycling!
Pool: The pool will be open at 6:30am tomorrow morning so make use of these bright mornings and get up!!
