Club Notes

Dromineer Triathlon – Race 2: takes place this Wednesday at 7:00pm SHARP. The weather forecast for Wednesday is looking good! Try your best to make it.

Monday Running: Shane will be back today for this session.

Westport Triathlon: Sinnead Oakes made it onto the podium at the recent sprint triathlon in Westport, Co. Mayo. Sinnead finished in a time of 1:12 and that was good enough for 3rd place in the women’s race and 18th overall.

Kilkee Training: A few club members went down to Kilkee on Sunday for a training session on the Hell of the West course. Well what can we say? For a finish there were only four club members tough enough, brave enough, dedicated enough… (or perhaps dopey enough not to check the weather forecast) to travel to Kilkee to train over the Hell of The West course in preparation for the 29th.  On arrival at the car park there were a bunch of other triathletes from a Clare club with the same idea (although for some reason they were doing run, bike, swim) and a whole host of kayaking trainees out on the water so at least we didn’t get lonely.  The swim was absolutely beautiful, (really) ! Pj Brett and Dan Hogan showed just how much a consistent winter in the pool can bring you on as they powered round the bay, ‘Klane liftin’.

At this stage the weather was quite reasonable so apart from the wind, all we had to contend with on the bike course was Dan drafting like mad for the entire thing, sure we all know what that fella is like!  The good news is Clare County Council have been busy since last year and the road surface is like Michael Bublé at a baby shower.  The bad news however is I’m lying and the roads are still treacherous! In an attempt to prepare ourselves for warp speed transitions in two weeks time we decided to go for the flying dismount off the bike.  Eoin got a bit excited about this however and had the feet out of the shoes in readiness somewhere around the 35km mark but unfortunately, also before we had to stop at a number of junctions to let traffic pass. We pretended we didn’t know him!

So finally for the run, well I hoped it was going to be a social, conversational pace enjoyable experience.  Not so, Dan took off like a hairy goat leaving Pj, Eoin and Sinnead crucifying themselves to follow him.  I’m very glad to report that even though the weather turned to custard half way through, no one gave up and we battled a headwind all the way back to the cars, soaking and wrecked and very smug…..just in time to see a very forlorn Clare club heading out on the swim… Ha!

Athletics: Darren Dunne took part in the U/17 Munster 800m track race over the weekend and finished 7th in a time of 2:10. Killian Cullagh was also racing. He took part in the U/17 1500m and finished in 6th in a time of 4:40. He also took part in the 3000m and finished in 4th in a time of 9:54.

Bike Racing: The club had just one member in racing action this weekend. Kennethy Kennedy made his way down to Cobh for a hilly race on Sunday and was unlucky not to score as he finished in 9th place with the top 8 scoring.
