2016 Triathlon review

Whats another year…..

So 2016 has come to an end and another triathlon season begins in earnest, but what have we learned from the previous year?

Well…. firstly that when it comes to running an event Nenagh TC can mix it with the best. Over 2016 the club held the first National series / National championship event of the year and set a high standard for other races to catch. We followed that with the “try a tri” in conjunction with Nenagh Lions club, an event that caught the attention of the town and was the biggest “try a tri” event in Ireland last year. We managed to introduce over 200 locals and not so local novice triathletes to the world of triathlon and this can only be a good thing for the club in the coming years. The Lough Derg sprint was a voyage of stubbornness for the race committee and though she may be small, she was fierce and well received by all who took part.

We also found out that we have some serious athletic talent in the local area with Darren Donkey Dunne leading the charge on the Nenagh front…..at this stage the list of awards and good results are too long to mention but suffice to say the success has not gone unnoticed and Darren joins an exclusive list of members who have made the Guardian Sportsperson awards…..well done Donkey! We also had some big performances on the swimming front from Maeve Ryan and the small matter of adding new members to the IronMan club in Anthony (again), Martin, Denis, and John. Special mention has to be made to the other new member to this club, Carmel Finn, who basically took part in any sporting event that was on the calendar….. the only surprising part was that she didn’t make the field for the All-Ireland Hurling final! At committee level all we can say is well done to all and ye all did the club proud.

Easy day out on the road for the lads…….

The committee created a very big timetable of events over the year and on a whole most were a success….and this is all down to the commitment and support of club members. It is not easy at times to stay committed on the dreary wet nights or the long hard training cycles but rain or shine the club turned out in force to make the club year a success. And on the event front all the races were well supported and members were generous with their time and marshalling skills. The committee thank everyone for all the effort in the past 12 months.

Not too much on offer……

And we could not go through a review without a mention (and to any of the triathlon lads this is a bare mention!!!) to the success of the cycling side of the club over the last year. No more difficult a sport to take part in, hence the rest of us hide on our TT bikes but the efforts of the racing lads and in particular the Ras lads, Shane, Ken and Mike, really put the club on the map…..so all we can hope is more of the same for the coming season, which, given the level shown at training should be well possible.

So what does 2017 have in store for us?

Well really there is no better time to be a member of the club than the present. There are very few clubs in the county that offer the level of sessions for every level with the majority cost free. The goal for the coming season will be to follow-up on the successes from 2016 and grow the club as a whole and provide training and guidance for any one willing to undertake any form of triathlon or adventure race over the course of the year.

The usual events will go ahead and as ever the best way to improve is to commit to as many of the events on the season calendar as possible. Many the person has surprised themselves in what is possible with a bit of commitment. The club take as much pride in a novice completing their first triathlon event as the seasoned athlete winning races so no better time than to set a New Year resolution to target an event or challenge…..club members are always happy to offer advice and assistance!!

In 2017 the club will look to further develop the novice element of the club and will again provide novice training sessions and will work with the Lions club for the second running of the Nenagh “try a tri” in June. This year also sees the introduction of our Junior club and we will continue training sessions and put together a race calendar for those interested in attending triathlon events during the year.

The end of the year will see the usual suspects come out of retirement and back into IronMan mode in IronMan Barcelona… bit of work to do yet and given the Christmas excess some members of the party have the shed half their body weight to make the race weight….no names mentioned but if anyone saw the pictures from the 10 year review ye will know who….

So to name just a few events to come over the next 12 months……. feast your eyes on this mouth watering list!!!

  • The “Winter – warrior” cycle events
  • Club training weekends and Winter duathlons
  • Nenagh Masters / Nenagh TC Galas
  • Club week
  • North Tipp Sprint
  • Nenagh Run Series
  • Lahinch training weekend
  • Dromineer Series
  • Lions club / Nenagh TC “Try a tri”
  • Lough Derg Sprint triathlon
  • Club weekend away
  • End of Year Cycle / Swim
  • IronMan Barcelona

As ever the success of the club and the sessions we run can only work with the commitment, dedication and participation of our club members. So we hope that we will see ye all getting the most out of the coming season….and as always if you want to drag a family member or friend or person you wish to inflict pain on to any of the sessions, we are always open for assisting!!!!

Happy training!

The Nenagh Triathlon Club Committee.
